This makes it a great stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking, and Arctic camping.

The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves using liquid fuel that are plagued by unburned fuel remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be fixed by simply flipping over the bottle. This disconnects the intake hose from the fuel, and forces it to suck air which smothers the flame and depressurizes the bottle.

This is an innovative solution to an old problem and it certainly is effective. The Nova can also be used with a variety of regular fuel bottles that seal with an o-ring, including MSR bottles. It comes with a stove bag that includes pockets for tools, spares as well as lubricant and the fuel pump.

Its price is also very reasonable when compared to canister stoves that have similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and a joy to use.

Kovea Hydra

The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove 5kw fuel stove was first marketed in 2010 and has been a favourite choice for backpackers ever since. The Hydra is not as popular among UK backpackers anymore possibly because they've been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the newest lightweight offerings from China or Korea. However, this doesn't mean it's any less useful.

It's a small multi fuel stove and light stove, burning all liquid fuels, including white gas and propane butane through one nozzle. It's a standard stove that has the burner mounted to a body that is anchored by three fold-out support legs. A pump is located on the top of the fuel line and the generator loop is positioned around the inlet and the flame spreader sits above that. The burner is a low-velocity flame type. This makes it less affected by the wind.

It is a very versatile cooker as it can be used with isobutane canisters or propane canisters. It is easy to simmer on isobutane or propane and burns all types of fuel at a decent level but is a little slower than other stoves when you use white gas.

One thing to be aware of when using the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English that was clearly not written by an indigenous speaker of the language. The instructions caution you against using certain types of lighter fluid. If they are mistaken they could result in an accident, and possibly put Kovea in legal trouble. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas container of a reputable brand will work fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an ideal option for those looking for a multifuel cookware that cooks with a variety fuels. It can be used with gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It comes with separate controls for each fuel type and allows you to alter the size of the flame. This stove comes with a fuel pipe that is flat on the floor and is connected to the tank quickly.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it requires maintenance to keep it running efficiently. It could be dangerous as it gets flaming when priming. This issue is common to all stoves that use liquid fuel that utilize a secondary spindle on the stove end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.

Another issue is that it requires different jets for each type of fuel. If you cook using kerosene, the jet hole will be smaller than if using gas. It's not a major issue but it's important to mention.

MSR Whisper Lite

The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the lightest, smallest and cheapest multi fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It is able to be used with canister or liquid fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% over its predecessor, and the burner system has been redesigned to improve heat distribution. This is a great choice for backpackers on a tight budget or beginners.

It takes some time to install, prime, and boil water but the whistler Lite is a reliable camping stove that will not disappoint you. MSR created the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. It's a similar design to the whistler but is more compact and provides superior performance. However it's not as inexpensive as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a great alternative that offers the same setup at half the price. Whisperlite International and Universal can be used with isobutane. Both versions use the same basic design however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.

Coleman Sportster II

It's a simple, no-frills Coleman stove that does the job. It's sturdy and compact, and it's self-contained with the tank at the bottom and burner up at the top. This makes it easy to use and is a great choice for beginners, backpackers looking to reduce weight and those of us who have spares in the van.

The stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also known as white gas) This stove can be used with non-leaded gasoline too. A gallon of gasoline will last for as long as a typical Coleman liquid fuel cylinder so you'll save money on fuel by using this alternative.

Liquid fuel stoves have a steep learning curve, as you'll have to properly pressurize and prime them before you can create a beautiful blue flame going. If you do it wrong the fuel could pool, spray beyond the burner, or even sputter. To get the hang of this do some practice outside before your excursion.

The stove will lose some performance and flame odor efficiency if you use non-Coleman fuels, but this is a tradeoff for its versatility. Just be sure you're buying unleaded gasoline, and not one augmented with methanol or ethanol (alcohol). These kinds of fuels can cause the unit's performance to decline and even explode.

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko multi fuel stove from South Africa (formerly known as the Jiko) is a lightweight multifuel stove made for harsh environments like Africa. It's an extremely compact and reliable all in one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs and also gels through a single nozzle. It's a light, minimalist design that costs less than the majority of multifuel stoves. It also comes with low cost of ownership and fuel is less expensive per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves feature a separate nozzle for each fuel type. This makes them difficult to change in cold weather or using gloves, and could increase their overall weight. The newer types of multifuel stoves have discovered a way to make use of the same nozzle for different fuels, making it easier. The latest versions of these stoves are referred to as 'hybrid' or "compressed 5kw defra multifuel stove stoves'. there are many names for them like isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene, and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.

Another option is to purchase a multifuel stove kit that converts your regular Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. They are sold in camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and can be bought internationally. They are ideal for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels except diesel and with the appropriate accessories they can even simmer.nrg-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifuel-cast-iron-fireplace-portable-defra-approved-325.jpg
